Dark at 5, Training at 6: The Stimulant-Free Evening Session

The clocks went back, and after-work training now happens in the dark. Here's how to run the evening session without a 6PM dose of caffeine working against your sleep.

Daylight saving ended on November 1. The sun sets around 5PM now, and if you train after work, you train in the dark.

The usual answer is a caffeinated pre-workout at 5:30. It gets you through the session. Then it's still in your system at 11PM, and the sleep your training needs comes up short.

Here's the evening session without a stimulant: one habit to change, and three products that don't need a pre-workout moment.

Keep Caffeine in the Morning

Caffeine's half-life averages around five hours, and it varies a lot between people. A 5:30PM scoop is still working at bedtime.

In a controlled study, 400 mg of caffeine taken six hours before bed cut total sleep by more than an hour, and the people taking it mostly didn't notice (Drake et al., 2013). You don't feel wired. You just recover less.

→ So

Keep caffeine to the first half of the day. Our Smart Cycling protocol runs caffeine 5d on / 2d off from 100 mg a day, and takes it in the morning.

The training itself isn't the problem. A 2019 meta-analysis found evening exercise didn't harm sleep in healthy adults. The exception was vigorous exercise that ended within an hour of bedtime (Stutz et al., 2019). Finish by 7:30, and a 6PM session is fine.

Creatine: Any Time, Every Day

Creatine gets sold as a pre-workout, as if the scoop before your session is the one that counts.

It isn't. So if you forget it at 5:45, you haven't missed anything.

→ So

Creatine Monohydrate Powder carries 5,000 mg of creatine monohydrate per scoop, with nothing else in it. Creatine raises phosphocreatine stores in muscle, which regenerate ATP during short, hard efforts. That supports strength and power output.*

It works through saturation. Stores build over weeks of daily use and stay full as long as you keep taking it. One scoop at breakfast, with dinner, or after training does the same job. Pick the time you'll remember.

It's Daily on our Smart Cycling protocol, 5 g a day with no loading phase. Creatine has no dose threshold to cycle. New to it? Start smaller for the first week if your stomach needs time to adjust, and drink water through the day.

Stamina: Built Daily, Not Spiked at 5:45

Stimulant-free pre-workouts get pitched as the weaker version: the same idea, minus the kick.

That framing misses the point. A non-stimulant blend isn't trying to spike you before one session. It builds a baseline across all of them.

→ So

Stamina Herbal Complex is led by 1,000 mg of horny goat weed extract, with 100 mg of maca root and 50 mg each of tongkat ali, Panax ginseng, L-arginine, muira puama, saw palmetto, and polypodium vulgare. There's no caffeine in it. The blend supports stamina and steady energy.*

Take two capsules 20 to 30 minutes before a meal, on training days and rest days alike. Lunch works well. Herbs like these build their effect with consistent use, so don't expect to feel it as a jolt.

It's Daily on our Smart Cycling protocol. One pairing note: we don't stack it with ashwagandha, since both act on hormonal axes. Pick one.

After: Protein Before Dinner Gets Late

You finish at 7:15. Dinner isn't ready until 8:30, or it's whatever's fastest.

That's a long gap after a session, and the fast option is rarely the high-protein one.

→ So

Whey Protein Isolate (Vanilla) delivers 22 g of protein per scoop. Whey isolate is rich in leucine, the amino acid that switches on muscle protein synthesis. Protein after training supports muscle recovery.*

Shake it with cold milk on the way home. Vanilla also stirs into yogurt or oats if dinner is the meal.

It's Daily on our Smart Cycling protocol. Protein is food, not a compound with a receptor, so there's nothing to cycle.

Caffeine in the morning. Creatine whenever you'll remember it. The stamina blend before lunch. Protein on the way home. None of it needs a 5:30PM scoop, and all of it leaves your sleep alone.
