“Meta-analysis of 8 RCTs (n=587) evaluating silymarin (from milk thistle, 140-600 mg/day for 1-6 months) on liver enzymes. Silymarin significantly reduced ALT (WMD=-4.19 U/L, p=0.009) and AST levels, demonstrating hepatoprotective effects. Larger reductions were observed in patients with higher baseline enzyme elevations.”Voroneanu et al., Complementary Therapies in Medicine, 2018
“Double-blind, placebo-controlled RCT of 36 patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. Silymarin (700 mg/day) for 8 weeks significantly reduced hepatic steatosis on ultrasound, lowered ALT and AST (p<0.05), and decreased insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) versus placebo, supporting silymarin's role in liver enzyme normalization.”Hashemi et al., Journal of Hepatology, 2009
