Indian Barberry

Berberis aristata

A thorny shrub native to the Himalayan foothills, used for over 2,500 years in Ayurvedic medicine. The roots and bark of Berberis aristata are exceptionally rich in berberine — a bright-yellow isoquinoline alkaloid that activates AMPK, the master regulator of cellular energy metabolism, making it one of the most studied natural compounds for metabolic health.

What the research shows.

Systematic review and meta-analysis of 27 RCTs (n=2,569) on berberine for type 2 diabetes and metabolic syndrome. Berberine (typically 500 mg 2–3×/day for 8–12 weeks) significantly reduced fasting blood glucose, HbA1c, total cholesterol, LDL, and triglycerides versus placebo, with efficacy comparable to standard oral antidiabetic agents.Lan et al., Journal of Ethnopharmacology, 2015
Mechanistic review of berberine's AMPK-activating pharmacology. Berberine activates AMPK through inhibition of mitochondrial complex I and increased AMP:ATP ratio, leading to downstream effects on gluconeogenesis, lipogenesis, and autophagy. Poor oral bioavailability (~5%) means GI-tract and microbiome-mediated effects contribute meaningfully to systemic outcomes.Yin, Ye & Jia, Metabolism, 2008
