4 Things Heating Season Does to Your Skin (And the Fix for Each)

Turning the heat on dries the air indoors. Your skin feels it within a week. Here's what changes, and the fix for each layer, from the surface down to the dermis.

Warm air holds more water than cold air. Heat the cold air from outside and its relative humidity drops. Indoors, in winter, it often falls below 30%.

Dry air pulls water from wherever it can find it. The top layer of your skin is the closest source.

That's why skin goes from fine to tight in the first week the heat runs. Your products haven't changed. The air around you has.

The fix is a sequence: hydrate the surface, seal it, feed the collagen beneath it, and keep the routine gentle enough to do every night. Here are the four changes and the product for each.

The Surface Loses Water Faster

Your skin loses water all day through evaporation. Dermatologists call it transepidermal water loss. Low humidity speeds it up.

The surface feels tight before it looks dry. By the time flakes show, the top layer has been short on water for days.

→ So

Humectants answer this. They bind water and hold it in the top layer of skin. PDRN Brightening Serum is built on four of them: glycerin, sodium hyaluronate, sodium PCA, and panthenol.

A note on the headline ingredient. PDRN (polydeoxyribonucleotide) is a DNA fragment derived from salmon. Most of its research comes from clinic injections, not serums. The humectants do the hydrating here. Skip it if you're allergic to fish.

The fix: apply two to four pumps to damp skin, not dry. Humectants pull from the nearest water, and in a heated room you want that to be your rinse, not your skin.

The Lipid Layer Can't Hold the Water In

Between your skin cells sits a layer of lipids: ceramides, cholesterol, and fatty acids. It's the seal that keeps water inside.

Hot showers, harsh cleansers, and dry air all wear it down. A humectant alone won't fix that. Without a seal on top, dry air takes back what the serum just added.

→ So

That's the job of an occlusive: a film that slows evaporation. Tallow Cream Orange & Bergamot pairs grass-fed beef tallow with jojoba and olive oil. Tallow is mostly saturated and monounsaturated fat, close in makeup to the oils your skin produces.

Use it as the last step at night. Bergamot oil can make skin more sensitive to sunlight, so keep it off your morning face. Prefer a different scent? Tallow Cream Lemongrass & Lavender works the same way.

The fix: humectant first, occlusive second, every night. Order matters more than either product.

The Collagen Underneath Keeps Thinning

Serums and creams work on the surface. Beneath it, the dermis holds the collagen that gives skin its structure. Production declines steadily from your mid-20s.

Winter didn't cause that. It makes it easier to see. Thinner, drier skin shows every line, and no cream reaches the layer where collagen is made.

→ So

Collagen peptides work from the inside. A meta-analysis of 26 clinical trials found hydrolyzed collagen improved skin hydration and elasticity. Hydrolyzed collagen supports skin hydration and elasticity with consistent daily use.*

Collagen Creamer (Vanilla) puts grass-fed collagen peptides and MCT into the coffee you already drink, with 10 g of protein per scoop. Collagen is Daily in our Smart Cycling protocol, and one scoop is the daily dose. It's a structural protein with no tolerance effect, so consistency is the whole game.

The fix: one scoop in your first coffee, every day. Results build over weeks. Want to compare formats? Our collagen guide covers them all.

Dry Skin Can't Take a Rough Routine

A weakened barrier is a reactive one. Scrubs, rough towels, and tugging all hit harder in winter.

Most people answer dry skin by doing more. The better move is doing less, more gently, every night.

→ So

Gua Sha Face Oil blends rosehip, camellia, and grapeseed oil with panax ginseng, pomegranate seed oil, and vitamin E. It gives a gua sha stone, or your fingers, enough slip to glide without dragging the skin.

Light upward strokes along the jaw, cheekbones, and forehead help skin look less puffy. Two minutes is enough. The pressure should be light enough that skin doesn't stretch.

The fix: serum on damp skin, a few drops of oil, two minutes of strokes, then seal with tallow. A calm end to the day is the routine you'll keep.

Hydrate, seal, feed, and go gently. Three steps happen on your face at night. One happens in your coffee cup in the morning.

Your skin barrier has two sides, and heating season hits both. Build your stack around the layer your skin is missing first, from every Glow product, inside and out. Dry air reaches more than your skin, too. Here's what shorter days do to the rest of your body.

5 Skincare Actives That Work Better From the Inside Out

Retinol, hyaluronic acid, peptide serums — topical actives do real work. But the mechanisms they try to trigger internally are more efficiently reached from below the epidermis. Here's where the layering actually matters.

A Science-Backed Skincare Routine (Inside and Out)

Most skincare routines stop at the epidermis — the outermost 0.1mm of your skin. They ignore the dermis beneath it, where collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid are actually synthesized. No topical product reaches the dermis in meaningful concentrations. This layer responds to systemic inputs. A complete routine works both sides: topical actives on the surface, systemic compounds from within.

The Supplement Guide for Hair Loss That's Actually Honest

Hair loss content falls into two categories: 'this miracle supplement regrows everything' and 'nothing works, see a dermatologist.' The truth is between them. Some supplements have evidence for specific types of hair loss — nutritional deficiency and stress-induced shedding respond well. Pattern hair loss requires medical intervention. None of them are miracle cures. Here's the honest version, with the type-specific framework that determines whether supplementation is the right tool.

Why Your Collagen Routine Still Isn't Working

Collagen rebuilds skin's protein matrix. It doesn't touch hair or nails, and it doesn't work without the minerals that hold it together. Here's the 3-layer system that actually covers all three.

When to Take Every Supplement (The Complete Timing Guide)

Your body absorbs, metabolizes, and responds to nutrients differently depending on when you take them. Fat-soluble compounds taken without fat pass through you. Stimulatory adaptogens taken at night keep you up. Minerals taken together compete for the same transporters. This is the complete timing protocol — organized by window, with the pharmacokinetic reasoning behind every recommendation.
